Why passphrase hints belong in your ledger, not your phone
A misplaced hint on a mobile device often outlives the wallet label it was meant to explain. Paper placement rules that heirs can follow.
When clients arrive with a passphrase hint saved in a notes app, the hint often references a wallet label that changed after a device migration. The phone survived; the context did not.
We recommend a dedicated hint field in the recovery ledger that sits adjacent to the wallet inventory row—not in a separate digital file. The hint should remind you of your personal mnemonic without storing the passphrase itself. Examples we have seen work: “summer kitchen phrase, 2019 variant” or “second line of poem, not first.”
Heirs reading the ledger should understand which wallet row the hint applies to without opening a phone. If you must cross-reference a physical object, note its container ID on the same page.
Annual verification is the moment to confirm the hint still matches your memory and that the wallet label has not drifted. One client discovered their “main BTC” label referred to a wallet they had emptied two years prior—the hint field made that obvious during a fifteen-minute desk review.
If you are starting fresh, block one evening to copy hints from digital storage into the ledger, then delete the digital copies deliberately. The goal is a single authoritative paper trail, not duplication across mediums.
